Valve told buyers weeks ago that early Steam Machine units would ship with a single 16GB DDR5 SODIMM instead of two 8GB sticks, running in single-channel mode. What wasn't clear until now was exactly how much that costs in real games — and the first solid numbers are in, and they're specific enough to matter if you're deciding whether to open the case. It's the kind of detail the first wave of Steam Machine reviews flagged only in passing as part of a broader "underpowered internals" complaint — these numbers put an actual figure on it.

Why there's only one stick in the box

The Steam Machine has two SODIMM slots, but the initial consumer batch fills only one of them. Speaking to Digital Foundry, Steam Machine engineer Yazan Aldehayyat said sourcing 8GB SODIMM sticks in the volume Valve needed had become "literally impossible" amid the ongoing DRAM shortage, leaving a single 16GB module as the only realistic option for hitting the console's price and ship date. Some pre-release review units reportedly went out with 2x8GB dual-channel configurations, which only added to the confusion once retail units started arriving with just one stick and an empty second slot.

Single-channel memory means the CPU can't read and write to two DIMMs simultaneously, which narrows available memory bandwidth compared to a dual-channel setup with the same total capacity — even though the Steam Machine still reports the same 16GB either way.

What the benchmarks actually show

The performance hit isn't uniform, and that's the useful part of this story. Testing that surfaced this week found CPU-heavy titles took the biggest penalty: Baldur's Gate 3 lost around 15.3% of its frame rate running single-channel versus dual-channel, and Resident Evil 4 dropped about 10%. Titles that lean harder on the GPU than the CPU were barely affected, with most showing gains of only 0.6% to 3.6% when dual-channel memory was restored — well within the range where you'd need a frame counter to notice at all.

That split tracks with how memory bandwidth normally behaves: games that spend more of their frame time waiting on the CPU to simulate physics, AI, or a busy scene graph are the ones that feel a bandwidth-starved memory subsystem. Games where the GPU is the bottleneck mostly don't care how many memory channels are feeding the CPU, because the CPU isn't the thing holding the frame rate down.

Can you fix it yourself?

Technically, yes. The Steam Machine's second SODIMM slot is empty, not absent, so adding a matching 16GB DDR5-5600 stick restores dual-channel operation and the memory-bandwidth headroom that comes with it. In practice, that upgrade currently runs around $200 for the stick alone, and getting to the slot means removing the outer case, several fan and antenna cables, and the power supply — a real teardown, not a tool-free thumbscrew job, based on the disassembly process documented by Gamers Nexus.

Whether that's worth it depends entirely on your library. Valve has said future production batches "might be different," but hasn't committed to when — or whether — dual-channel memory becomes the standard configuration again rather than a matter of luck at fulfillment time. If you're weighing a Steam Machine purchase specifically for CPU-heavy games, that's worth factoring in before you buy rather than after you've already got the box on your shelf.
