New portable UI for RPCS3

RPCS3, the PS3 emulator, has received a UI overhaul for handheld devices, featuring a look that mirrors SteamOS on devices like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally.

Quick access and direct controls

By pressing Start + Select, the overlay appears instantly, bringing up options for screenshots, save states, and game restarts, with the most frequently used settings highlighted.

Resolution options and the framerate limiter can be adjusted without needing to restart the title, reducing friction in portable gameplay.

A performance overlay is also available to monitor frame rates, with simple activation.

CPU-level performance improvements

In parallel, the team announced advancements in Cell CPU emulation, with a focus on SPU patterns. A researcher identified new code generation techniques, resulting in average FPS gains of 5 to 7% in Twisted Metal, one of the most SPU-demanding titles, with benefits that extend to the entire library.

Steam Library integration

The ability to create Steam shortcuts for games from the desktop interface has been added, keeping them in the Steam library and allowing them to be launched without leaving the interface.

With the overlay and the integration, the workflow is complete: add the game to Steam, launch it from the library, and adjust settings during the session without a keyboard. The focus also includes compatibility with Windows handhelds beyond the Steam Deck.

Why this matters

RPCS3 remains in active development and already offers full boot support for a large portion of the PS3 library. These changes bridge the gap between technical functionality and a pleasant couch-gaming experience.

The team points out that the project is well-positioned for future platforms like the Steam Machine, in addition to benefiting the Steam Deck and ROG Ally in the short term.
