Patch 1.2 improves performance on Steam Deck, bringing the game to 30–35 fps in the open world and up to 50 fps in indoor areas, with visual fidelity trade-offs.
Death Stranding 2 has received Patch 1.2 for PC, and those playing on Steam Deck are now seeing a very different picture than what arrived at launch. Kojima Productions and Nixxes Software highlighted a dedicated handheld preset, which had been promised since the initial announcement.

Before and after: numbers that matter
Before patch 1.2, Steam Deck OLED handheld sessions were virtually unplayable for most of the game. After the patch and by activating the integrated handheld preset, open-world experiences remain stable between 30 and 35 fps, while minimally cluttered indoor environments reach 50 fps.
As for battery life, it comes at a cost. Expect about 1.5 hours of gameplay per charge. Use a power bank for longer sessions.
The handheld preset reduces visual fidelity as expected, but on a 7.4-inch OLED display, this trade-off seems acceptable. Death Stranding 2 shines on the big screen, but the handheld experience is much better than the pre-patch state suggested.
What this means for portable gamers
The optimization work for the Steam Deck is real and not just an afterthought. Even with handheld presets appearing in games like Resident Evil 9 and Crimson Desert, it is the set of optimizations in 1.2 that really moved the needle.
For Death Stranding 2, the update opens the game to a portion of players who had given up on the handheld. As PC Gamer journalist Wes Fenlon said, the game delivers what is arguably the best fusion of mechanics and meaning in Kojima's career. Getting this experience to run on portable hardware is worth the attention.
