Valve is working on the Steam Deck 2, but there is no release date until they confirm a significant improvement over the original; understand the context.
The Steam Deck 2 is still in development by Valve, but the company has not disclosed a release window. The priority is to deliver a real improvement over the original model before any date is announced.
What we know about the Steam Deck 2
"We are working hard on it," said Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais. "If we look at our hardware projects over the years, we can draw a direct line from the Steam Controller and the Steam Machine to the Steam Deck and everything we are announcing and releasing this year. And we hope that the Steam Deck 2 follows much the same idea, where what we are doing now becomes learning that feeds into the next one."
Griffais also stated that Valve is not interested in achieving 20%, 30%, or 50% performance gains with the same battery life; there is a clear notion of what the next Steam Deck will be like.
Progress already seen and the current market
Since the initial release in 2022, Valve has released an OLED version of the Deck in November 2023, which helped inspire other major handheld gaming PCs from companies like Asus and Lenovo.
Recently, access to these devices has become more challenging and expensive. Rising memory and storage prices, driven by demand from AI and data centers, have led manufacturers to adjust their prices. AyaNeo suspended pre-orders for its Next 2, and Valve delayed the launch of its Steam Machine to 2026. The price of the Deck 2 has not yet been announced.
Peripherals and market perceptions
Meanwhile, reviews for the new $100 Steam Controller have started off positively, standing out among the peripherals available on the market.
