Valve introduces the 2nd generation Steam Controller for £85 in the UK and $99 in the US, featuring haptic trackpads and compatibility with PC, Steam Deck, and Steam Machine.
Price and availability
Valve has revealed that the new Steam Controller can be ordered starting May 4th, priced at £85 in the UK and $99 in the United States.
This is the second generation of the gamepad, which promises compatibility with PCs, the Steam Deck handheld, and the upcoming Steam Machine.
Key features
Highlights include haptic trackpads that simulate mouse controls for PC games and a magnetic puck for device pairing and charging.
The controller was designed to work only with the Steam platform and is not compatible with consoles.
Price, market, and reaction
The price falls between standard controllers and premium versions, sparking debate among fans regarding the cost. For comparison, traditional models are in the £45-£65/$60-$75 range, while premium versions range from £120-£160/$150-$200.
Initial reviews from those who have tested the product have been mostly positive, especially regarding the trackpads and PC synchronization. Even so, it is not expected to replace the official console controllers like the Xbox Wireless Controller.
Online discussion has also pointed to the price as a central point, especially in relation to the history of the first generation, released in 2015.
Historical context
Valve already has a history with the Steam Machine, its second effort to bring PC gaming to the TV. In February, the company updated the price and release date of the Steam Machine, alongside the Steam Frame wireless VR headset, maintaining the target launch for the first half of 2026. The first hardware attempt, released in 2015, failed to break the dominance of Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo.
It is worth remembering that the Steam Controller only works with the Steam platform and is not compatible with consoles.
