Steam Deck 2 in development: Valve moves forward without a release date

Valve says the Steam Deck 2 is in development, with limited details. Find out what we already know about the product line's roadmap and the new controller.

Steam Deck 2 in development, but without a launch window

Valve has confirmed that the Steam Deck 2 is still in development, though without a set forecast. In a conversation with IGN, engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais said that the company is working hard on the next handheld, but there is no confirmation of a release date.

Griffais reinforced that Valve's approach is usually evolutionary: the lessons learned from each project, from the Steam Controller to the Steam Machine, serve as a foundation for the Steam Deck and for this year's announcements. He indicated that the Steam Deck 2 should follow this same path of accumulated learning.

The original Steam Deck was released at the beginning of 2022, and it is now approaching four years of service. While rivals have released several generations of handheld devices, Valve remains cautious.

There is also news for the line: Valve recently released the Steam Deck OLED, a mid-cycle update that brought screen improvements a year and a half ago, keeping the focus on the balance between performance and battery life.

In November 2025, Griffais revealed that Valve does not intend to simply push performance numbers at the expense of battery life: the goal is more real-world performance without sacrificing battery longevity.

Back in 2023, the company told The Verge that the next Steam Deck was at least a few years away, which fueled speculation about the launch of a new handheld at the end of 2025 or 2026. Although today's statements do not rule out the possibility of seeing the Deck 2 this year, progress is not yet at a stage to signal a concrete date.

On the hardware front, Valve also confirmed news: the new controller is available as of May 4, receiving praise from the press. PCMag awarded the device their Editors' Choice, with Will Greenwald praising its feel, functionality, and variety of features.

Greenwald points out that while the $99.99 price tag is higher than standard controllers, it remains below premium options like the DualSense Edge and Xbox Elite, and the feature set makes it an interesting purchase, especially for those who play primarily on Steam.

We invite you to comment: what do you expect from the Steam Deck 2? Do you believe we will see the handheld within this release cycle, or do you prefer Valve to focus on future hardware lessons? Leave your opinion below.
