How Valve reached the final design of the Steam Controller: hundreds of prototypes, 3D printing, and expert feedback defined the layout.
How it all started
The concept for the Steam Controller took shape shortly after the start of the Steam Deck. In an interview with designers Lawrence Yang and Steve Cardinali, the team of just four professionals described an initial phase of ultra-fast iteration, involving hundreds of different prototypes.
Rapid iteration and prototyping
Using in-house 3D printing, the team tested hundreds of static layouts before narrowing them down to a line of functional prototypes with the final version's layout, while still experimenting with configuration variations.
Ergonomic improvements and feedback
The team identified opportunities to improve ergonomics by increasing the size of the face buttons and trackpads, enhancing the thumbstick grip, and improving D-pad responsiveness, especially for diagonal inputs. The process included collaboration with fighting game professionals to evaluate the D-pad.
The result and impact
The Steam Controller was launched and sold out quickly, with stock appearing on resale sites. Thus, the accessory gained significant visibility among enthusiasts.
Final notes
Even those who do not yet have the device might be interested in skins and other aesthetic options for when it arrives.
