Helldivers 2 update 6.22 crashes Steam Deck and Linux; previous patches do not solve it. Proton Experimental may offer a temporary solution.
A recent update for Helldivers 2, known as Machinery of Oppression or 6.22, is causing crashes on the Steam Deck and on Linux systems. PS5 and PC appear to be less affected, according to current reports.
Several users, especially on the Steam Deck, have noted that update 6.22 causes the game to fail at launch or freeze during gameplay. Previous attempts at fixing it, such as clearing the shader cache, do not resolve the issue.
There are also reports on Linux, with error messages shared in communities, and even comments indicating that the problem appears on Windows in some cases as well. The situation seems more severe for Linux/Steam Deck, at least for the moment.
Fixes in progress
There are signs that a fix has been implemented in Proton Experimental, in the bleeding-edge branch, as disclosed by the community. To test this adjustment, go to your Steam library, find Proton Experimental, open Properties, select the Betas tab and choose bleeding-edge, update, and launch the game with this version of Proton. The validation comes from a volunteer tester for Proton QA identified as Chiku.
Arrowhead, the developer responsible for the game, acknowledges the known issues on Linux/Steam Deck and has published a Known Issues post indicating that the game may not launch on these platforms, with the team working on fixes that should arrive soon.
