Valve advances on Steam Deck 2 with focus on a technological leap for 2026

Valve continues working on the Steam Deck 2, promising a technological leap for the handheld by 2026, while memory and supply disruptions impact the market.

Valve confirms it is actively working on the Steam Deck 2, signaling that the next handheld will arrive only when there is a relevant technological leap.

In the short term, the hardware expected for 2026 should directly influence the development of the portable successor.

The Steam Deck was released in February 2022; supply only caught up with demand in the following holiday season, after Valve suspended the reservation system and began selling directly.

Since the launch, Valve has released new models, but the handheld available today is still essentially based on the original design, with variations only in screen and storage.

CEO Gabe Newell already indicated, before the Steam Deck launch, that a second generation was on the company's radar. Since then, Valve has offered few updates on the next portable.

Griffais: technological leap is a condition for the Deck 2

In a recent interview with IGN, Pierre-Loup Griffais stated that the Deck 2 should follow Valve's line of evolution, connecting lessons from the Steam Controller, the Steam Machine, and new models expected to arrive by 2026. The idea is to incorporate everything Valve has learned with consumer hardware, although there is still no launch window.

In 2025, Griffais said that Valve would not release a second generation without a substantial technological gain; he cited that a 20% to 50% performance leap, while maintaining the same battery life, would be insufficient to justify a new model.

The company has been working in reverse starting from advancements in chip manufacturing and fundamental improvements to define what the Steam Deck 2 needs to offer. The research phase was reportedly already closed in 2025, with a good idea of what would come next, but the necessary technology is not yet commercially available, which delays the announcement.

Memory shortages add another challenge, as they even delayed information about the Steam Machine launch. Because it requires high-end hardware, the Deck 2 would be even more susceptible to supply chain disruptions.

Reports from February 2026 indicated that Steam Deck availability remains low in several regions, with the device sold out in important markets, including North America and Europe.
