Valve says the Steam Deck 2 is in development, with no release date. The Deck OLED has already arrived and the new controller arrives on May 4th.
Steam Deck 2 in development, but without a release date
Valve has confirmed that the Steam Deck 2 is in development, but did not provide a debut window. In an interview with IGN, programmer Pierre-Loup Griffais only said: "We are working hard on it," signaling progress but without a defined timeline, which suggests that the launch may take some time.
Valve's hardware trajectory and learning from the past
Griffais highlighted that, over the years, Valve tends to follow a line that connects the Steam Controller and the Steam Machine to the Steam Deck, and that the Deck 2 should leverage current lessons to shape the future.
Steam Deck updates over the years
The original Steam Deck hit the market in early 2022. Since then, there has been a mid-cycle update with the Steam Deck OLED, which brought a better screen. Griffais stated that Valve does not intend to seek only more performance at the cost of battery life, aiming for a truly next-generation improvement.
What is known — and what is not known — about the release
By the end of 2023, Valve told The Verge that a Steam Deck would take a few years to arrive, fueling speculation about 2025 or even this year. Griffais' latest words do not confirm a date, but suggest that the Deck 2 may not be close to being released.
New controller announced for May 4th
In addition, Valve confirmed that its new controller will be available starting May 4th. In our review, PCMag awarded the device with the Editors’ Choice, praising comfort, performance, and the extensive list of features and customization options. Priced at $99.99, it is above most common gamepads, but still below premium models like the DualSense Edge and the Xbox Elite, justifying itself through its versatility for those who play mainly via Steam.
Context and expectation
The set of announcements points to a strategy of continuity: lessons from each project feed future generations, keeping the Steam ecosystem active with new hardware as Valve advances.
