Valve launches the updated Steam Controller, inspired by the Steam Deck, priced at $99 with a global debut on May 4th.
Quick summary
Valve is once again targeting the living room with a modern controller, the successor to the 2015 model. The new Steam Controller uses a layout closer to the Steam Deck, while retaining the trackpads that made it unique.
What is new
- Addition of a second analog thumbstick
- Layout inspired by the Steam Deck
- Continues with the famous trackpads
- Steam Deck-style controller profiles, repairability supported by iFixit, and battery monitoring
Launch details
The controller will be released globally on May 4th, priced at $99, marking the start of Valve's hardware strategy for 2026, offering customizable inputs for Steam PCs or mobile devices.
Hardware context
Valve positions the new module as part of a larger ecosystem, which includes the future connection to the yet-to-be-released Steam Machine and the Steam Frame VR headset. According to hardware engineer Steve Cardinali, the delay for the console and headset came from rising memory and storage costs, which led Valve to launch the controller alone, as it “doesn’t have RAM in it.
” Meanwhile, the controller serves as a practical solution to keep pace until the arrival of the rest of the lineup.
Where to buy
The Steam Controller arrives on May 4th via the Steam Store.
