Limited stock and regional impacts

The Steam Deck continues to have restricted stock and is not widely available in major markets such as the United States and the United Kingdom.

Valve has been redirecting part of its resources toward other launches, including the Steam Controller, which arrives on May 4, while the Steam Machine and Steam Frame require memory types that are currently facing shortages.

The main cause: memory shortage

Availability depends on memory and storage, factors that are hindering stock replenishment. The company states it is actively working to resolve the issue, but there are no specific details on when stock will return. In an interview with IGN, Griffais said there are no specific details on when stock will return, but that the matter is being actively addressed.

Valve also points to logistical shipping difficulties and is seeking to maintain several manufacturer options to mitigate the impact of the memory shortage.

How Valve is trying to circumvent the issue

Executive Pierre-Loup Griffais explained that the strategy involves working with many manufacturers, both large and small, to expand supply in the face of the global memory scenario.

He compared the current situation to a microcontroller crisis observed during COVID-19, suggesting that the solution may follow the same logic — diversifying components.

Memory in the devices

  • Steam Deck: 16 GB RAM LPDDR5
  • Steam Frame: 16 GB RAM LPDDR5X
  • Steam Machine: 16 GB RAM DDR5 and 8 GB GDDR6 VRAM for the integrated GPU (AMD RDNA 3)

About the simultaneous launch

The idea of launching everything at the same time was discarded. The controller ended up being released first because it does not depend on internal RAM, and the joint launch plan was never a rigid rule.
