What changed: reservations open for the Steam Controller

Valve has announced the opening of a reservation queue for the Steam Controller after overwhelming initial demand. The device went on sale earlier this week, selling out rapidly and frustrating those who did not secure their unit.

How the reservation works

The queue operates similarly to the system used for the Steam Deck. When a reservation is converted into an order, the company sends a confirmation email to the reservation holders as soon as stock becomes available.

• Reservations are limited to one unit per user.
• After receiving the order email, you have 72 hours to complete the purchase.
• Those who have already purchased a Steam Controller cannot reserve another unit at this time.
• The account must be in good standing on Steam.
• It is necessary to have made a purchase on Steam before April 27, 2026.

Shipping schedule

Valve will begin fulfilling reservations next week in the US and Canada, with the following weeks dedicated to the UK, the EU, and Australia. There is no indication of how long it will take to clear the queue or when the Steam Controller will be on sale without a reservation.

Historical context

By comparison, Steam Deck reservations opened in July 2021 and began being fulfilled in February 2022; by October of that same year, the Steam Deck became available without a reservation. The Steam Controller is less complex and does not use RAM, which suggests that the production pace may be faster this time.

Product line updates

Simultaneously, there are signs that Valve may be preparing for the launch of the Steam Machine, despite there being no price announcement yet.
