Valve's Steam Controller sold out in minutes at launch, with reports of payment errors and intermittent stock; priced at $99.
Valve launched the new Steam Controller today, and within about 30 minutes, units were already sold out in most official stores. Even so, stock reappeared intermittently throughout the day.
The model redefines the concept of a PC controller by adapting the Steam Deck's haptic trackpads to a traditional gamepad format, adding the Grip Sense feature and touch-activated gyroscope control. The announced price is $99.
At today's launch at 1:00 PM (EDT), several users reported error messages due to "high order volume." Some reached the payment screen but were unable to confirm the purchase. About 30 minutes after sales began, the page indicated that the product was "sold out."
Reports indicate that the Steam Controller has been popping back into availability intermittently since then. Around 2:40 PM, it was possible to refresh the page and click the buy button, but the next screen did not load fully and the stock vanished again.
We have reached out to Valve to confirm restocking plans and will keep the public informed as soon as there is a response.
Why is this new Steam Controller so appealing? In a previous review, the accessory was described as nearly perfect for PC, with comfortable haptic trackpads, although there are connectivity limitations.
Now we want to know your opinion: do you intend to try and secure your Steam Controller today, or will you wait for the scheduled restock? Tell us in the comments how your experience with the launch has been.
