Rocket League receives Easy Anti-Cheat on Linux and SteamOS — will other devs follow?

Rocket League adds Easy Anti-Cheat on Linux/SteamOS via Proton; analyzes the impact for games on the Steam Deck and compatibility on Linux.

Rocket League with Easy Anti-Cheat on Linux and SteamOS: what changes

Rocket League now integrates Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) and maintains support for Linux, functioning via Proton on SteamOS. Although it is no longer listed in the Steam store, the title can be played on SteamOS through Epic Games.

This change follows the movement of other studios seeking Linux compatibility, such as 1047 Games with Splitgate: Arena Reloaded, which added support for Linux using the RedKard anti-cheat.

However, many AAA games with online multiplayer simply do not work on SteamOS due to incompatibility between anti-cheat and Linux, affecting titles such as Battlefield 6, Call of Duty, and EA Sports FC 26.

This gap prevents users of the Steam Deck, Lenovo Legion Go S, and Legion Go 2 from playing these titles, especially if the Steam Machine gains traction in the PC console market.

If the Steam Machine gains ground, it is likely that a significant portion of gamers will lose access to the most popular live-service games, unless more publishers invest in compatibility.

Despite the challenge, cases like Rocket League and Splitgate indicate that Linux is gaining ground and that more titles may follow, provided the community pushes for demand.

What do you think of this trend? Do you believe this movement could lead more big games to offer support for Linux and SteamOS?
