Windows 11 in motion: K2 aims to challenge SteamOS and achieve parity within two years

Microsoft launches the K2 initiative to make Windows 11 faster and more reliable, aiming for parity with SteamOS within two years.

Microsoft is testing a new internal initiative, dubbed K2, with the goal of making Windows 11 faster, more stable, and more reliable to prevent users from migrating to Linux, such as SteamOS, on platforms like Steam Machines. The Steam Deck with SteamOS showed superior performance to Windows 11 on identical hardware, which motivated Microsoft to seek advancements within two years.

What is K2 and why does it matter

According to reports, K2 focuses on addressing the biggest complaints about Windows 11, including excessive AI usage, poor performance, and instability.

Three pillars of the initiative

  • Pillar 1: maintaining robust and reliable updates, instead of releasing them quickly.
  • Pillar 2: encouraging internal communication and innovation so as not to focus solely on fixing past problems.
  • Pillar 3: stimulating community feedback, with input from Windows Insider meetings and a greater presence of team leaders on social media to interact with users.

Performance goals

Among the goals are speeding up File Explorer, improving file search, removing ads from the Start Menu, rebuilding the Start Menu to run faster, and returning the option to move and resize the taskbar. Microsoft has already indicated its intention to reach performance parity with SteamOS within two years.

Example of optimization gains

As a benchmark for performance improvement, a Windows version aimed at gaming handhelds, released with the Xbox Ally X, reduced the memory used by about 2 GB, which helped to slightly increase frame rates.

Pending issues for users and setup

Among the friction points is the requirement of a Microsoft account to install Windows, with few paths for local accounts. According to the report, to use a local account, it is necessary to bypass the current flow — by creating a Microsoft account, then a local account with admin privileges, and finally removing the Microsoft account.

Other frustrations mentioned include constant prompts to use Office 365, Copilot, and OneDrive, as well as the re-insertion of Edge as the default browser in various situations, including updates.

What may come of this

If this strategy is fast and effective, it could mark the biggest recovery of the decade for Microsoft and put even more pressure on Steam Machines as a direct competitor.

And you, do you think these changes will change the game for those who play on PC? Leave your opinion in the comments below.
