PRAGMATA: Switch 2 vs Steam Deck — which dominates the handheld experience?

Hands-on analysis of PRAGMATA on Switch 2 vs Steam Deck: performance, visual quality, and loading times.

PRAGMATA arrives on the Switch 2 and PC, provided by Capcom for this evaluation. The idea is to compare the handheld experiences and understand where each one performs best.

Visuals and performance: handheld Switch 2 vs Steam Deck

The Switch 2 improves visual quality in handheld mode, mainly through higher resolution, with more prominent shadows and darker areas. Textures appear sharper and character hair gains definition, which makes scenes more impactful.

However, the new shadows appear with grain on the edges, which can make some surfaces less pleasant. Distant objects show a checkerboard-like pattern, and the image can look a bit blurry, reminiscent of the upscaling effect in certain situations.

On the Steam Deck, performance stands out with more stability, maintaining about 40 FPS with only minor stutters in open areas. On the Switch 2, the frame rate varies between 40 and the low 20s in some sections, which breaks fluidity at critical moments.

The flicker caused by FSR 3 upscaling on the Deck is quite visible and can be annoying. In comparison, the DLSS patterns used for distant objects in the resolution enhancement technique appear less problematic, making the Deck look smoother at greater distances.

Battery life and loading times

In practice, the Deck has an advantage in battery life. Recommended settings should yield between 2.5 and 3.5 hours, while the Switch 2 stays around 2.5 hours or less.

  • Deck: 2.5 to 3.5 hours
  • Switch 2: 2.5 hours or less

Regarding loading, the Switch 2 offers faster loading times when starting new areas, while the Deck can present loading screens in some sections.

Docked experience

With the Switch 2 in the dock, the experience improves considerably. At 1440p, the image is sharper and the upscaling effect loses much of its presence. The frame rate remains stable, raising the overall quality compared to handheld mode.

Shadows are still a bit blurry, but they remain better than in portable mode. The overall quality is close to the handheld experience, but with higher resolution, more efficient upscaling, and more stable frames.

Steam Deck enhancements

On the Deck, it is possible to improve the appearance with a 30 FPS cap, maintaining good stability. Removing the cap, a good part of the game can reach 60 FPS. Lossless upscaling tools can increase the sense of fluidity, even when the framerate does not exactly reproduce 60 Hz.

Which handheld to choose?

In the end, the choice depends on preference. Some areas are better on the Switch 2, others on the Deck. The battery life and stability of the Deck favor those who value consistency, while the Switch 2 shines in shadows, textures, and loading times. The Switch 2 dock is the best way to play PRAGMATA, but the Deck offers great configuration versatility.

Overall, my experience with the Deck ended up being the favorite among the options, even though both offer a good experience. Capcom optimized it well, and playing on PC with the Steam Deck is also a viable option. If I have to choose, my verdict points to the Deck as the primary choice.

Which version would you choose to play PRAGMATA in portable mode? Leave your opinion in the comments and tell us which aspect was most decisive for you: stable performance, visual quality, or loading time.
