Valve reintroduces the Steam Machine with a compact design and powerful hardware, aiming to compete with Xbox and PlayStation, with an estimated price between US$ 999 and US$ 1.5 thousand for 2026.
More than a decade after the first Steam Machines, Valve reappears with a preview that positions the Steam Machine as a direct alternative to current-generation consoles, targeting Xbox and PlayStation.
Design
The Steam Machine features a cubic format of only 6 inches, designed to fit under the TV or sit on the desk without taking up space. The goal is to keep the focus on the game, not the size of the box.
To provide a scale reference, the PS5 presents a tall and wide setup (15.4 inches long, 4.1 wide, and 10.2 high). The Slim version reduces this to 14.1 x 3.8 x 8.5, but it is still larger than the Steam Machine.
Performance
The Steam Deck still surpasses the Switch in power, but it cannot reach the PS5. Nevertheless, it presents clear advantages, such as maintaining the entire Steam library between handheld and PC.
The Steam Machine brings two AMD chips and 16 GB of DDR5 RAM inside the box. The CPU is a 6-core Zen 4, with up to 4.8 GHz consuming about 30 watts. The GPU is RDNA 3 Navi 33 with 28 compute units, capped at 130 watts, accompanied by 8 GB of GDDR6 memory. These components are unusual in such a format, but they form a coherent set for the proposed objective.
Launch and Price
The Steam Machine and Steam Controller are expected to hit stores in the first half of 2026. Valve promises to bring price and schedule details in a future update.
In November of the previous year, Valve had already mentioned the Steam Machine, although without pricing. The current narrative indicates that memory and storage scarcity, aggravated by AI demand, may push prices up and impact the shipping schedule. The company indicated that it will need to review deadlines and tariffs due to this memory crunch.
With rising memory costs, the launch of the Steam Machine could exceed US$ 1,000. While Sony and Microsoft work to keep production costs low, Valve does not have the same level of scale. The estimate is US$ 999 for the 512 GB model and US$ 1,500 for the 2 TB version.
Final Considerations
The Steam Machine is not just a portable adaptation for the TV — it is a serious proposal as an alternative to traditional consoles. Nevertheless, the high price causes caution among those seeking PC power without building a complete setup.
With the already known Steam ecosystem, it remains to be seen how Valve will balance power, price, and availability when the product finally reaches stores.
