The return of the Steam Machine

Valve is once again targeting the living room with the Steam Machine, carrying lessons learned from the Steam Deck and a broader vision of how the PC can fit into the TV space.

What's new

The new Steam Machine is presented alongside a redesigned Steam Controller and the standalone Steam Frame VR headset. The proposal is to offer a console experience with the flexibility of a PC, without needing a dedicated desktop.

Specifications and performance

The machine is described as a compact PC powered by SteamOS 3, capable of accessing the entire Steam library without an additional rig. Valve claims it delivers over six times the performance of the Steam Deck, featuring a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 CPU and an RDNA3-based GPU, targeting 4K at 60 FPS with FidelityFX Super Resolution.

Storage options are 512 GB and 2 TB, with expansion via microSD and various ports for peripherals and external monitors.

Open ecosystem and compatibility

Unlike closed consoles, the Steam Machine emphasizes openness. It runs SteamOS, supports Proton to run many Windows games on Linux, and allows easy connection of keyboards, mice, gamepads, and other accessories. The interface has also been adjusted for TVs, besides working well on monitors.

Hardware, price, and launch

The form factor is a compact cube that fits under the TV or on the desk. Outputs include DisplayPort and HDMI, with DisplayPort capable of 8K and high refresh rates; some HDMI functions may depend on open-source drivers.

Valve makes it clear that the Steam Machine will not be subsidized like traditional consoles, and should have a price equivalent to a PC with similar performance. This might place it above the console price tier.

In addition, the company confirmed the revised Steam Controller and the Steam Frame, a standalone VR headset that can run games locally or stream from the Steam Machine.

Market observations

Although the hardware is not the newest generation on the market, there is cautious enthusiasm about the viability of a platform that combines PC flexibility with the convenience of a living room experience, without requiring mandatory subscriptions or upgrades.

Industry notes

Elsewhere in the ecosystem, there is mention of relationships between artificial intelligence and game recommendations, including references to a title called Public Eye by Wolf Games, highlighting the interface between traditional narrative and AI in the industry's future.

Call to action

What do you think? Can the Steam Machine truly change the way we play in the living room, or do you prefer to keep the traditional PC? Leave your comment and tell us which aspect interests you the most: price, library, or the experience with Proton and SteamOS.
