What is happening

Steam may be about to offer game performance estimates based on anonymized data collected by SteamOS. The idea appears to stem from the possibility of predicting how titles should run on your hardware.

How it could work

According to evidence pointed out by Dex3108 on the ResetEra forum, some strings in the new Steam client indicate plans to use this data for performance estimates. If confirmed, the feature could benefit those who are unsure of what their equipment is capable of, expanding the scope beyond the current Steam Deck Verified program.

Furthermore, it seems there is a possibility for users to input their PC specifications, suggesting that the utility would not be restricted to Valve hardware, but available to all Steam users. At the current stage, only devices with SteamOS have reportedly been asked to send anonymized data, which indicates that the implementation may take some time.

Risks and considerations

Notebookcheck points out an important issue: results could be skewed by game settings, third-party mods, or upscaling applications (such as Lossless Scaling). Even so, with a sufficient volume of data, it is possible to obtain a representative average, although this is an obstacle that Valve will need to face.
