Steam Deck on the dashboard tunes a Nissan 300ZX: from gaming to ECU calibration

A fan transforms a Steam Deck into a portable Linux PC to control the MicroSquirt ECU of a 1987 Nissan 300ZX with TunerStudio.

A car enthusiast showed how to transform a Steam Deck into a powerful tuning tool for a 1987 Nissan 300ZX. The device functions as a portable Linux machine that connects to the MicroSquirt ECU via a USB-C to serial adapter, running TunerStudio to adjust fuel, ignition timing, boost, and more in real time.

No modifications to the ECU or the Deck were necessary; communication is achieved solely with the proper adapter. The creator, Jake Symonds, also notes that it is relatively easy to learn Linux and that the Steam Deck can function as a desktop computer at home to analyze datalogs and other information, making the process even more convenient.
