Valve says the Steam Controller went out of stock faster than anticipated; restocking soon and schedule update coming.
What happened
Valve reported that the Steam Controller sold out quickly, exceeding expectations. The company stated it is working to restock quickly and should announce a schedule update soon.
Price, availability and features
The controller was released for $99 and, before it sold out, it was not available in all regions. Highlights include the trackpads, gyro, additional buttons, and the Steam Input platform, which allows for extensive customization.
The Puck accessory functions as a wireless dongle and magnetic charger on the back, while the magnetic thumbsticks use TMR technology for greater precision and the vibration motors offer complex force feedback patterns.
Compatibility
According to Valve, the Steam Controller works with any hardware that runs Steam, regardless of the operating system, including Windows, MacOS, and Linux. Tablets and smartphones are also supported.
History and context
Despite the name, this is the second Steam Controller produced by Valve. The original model arrived in 2015 alongside Steam Machines and featured two circular trackpads, one acting as a D-pad and the other as a replacement for the right analog stick. It was discontinued in 2019.
Other hardware announcements
The Steam Controller was unveiled alongside the Steam Machine, a Linux-based gaming PC, and a new virtual reality headset called the Steam Frame. Valve confirmed that the Steam Frame runs on Android and can connect wirelessly to PCs via the 6 GHz band.
Tell us in the comments: have you tried the Steam Controller or do you intend to buy one when the restock arrives? Which feature do you consider most important — the trackpads, the Puck, or the customization capabilities of Steam Input?
