New chapter for deck and roguelike fans

Mega Crit Games has launched the deckbuilder sequel Slay the Spire 2 on Steam Early Access for PC, Mac, and Linux, for $24.99. The title has already attracted over 500 thousand concurrent players on Steam and ranks among the platform's most played games.

The Early Access period should not be short: the team expects to remain in the development stage for one to two years. The original stayed in this phase for about a year and a half before its 2019 launch.

According to the official FAQ, the game heavily relies on player feedback to balance content, adjust quality of life, and ensure stable performance. More content will be added throughout Early Access, keeping the title in constant evolution and allowing for testing of experimental features and bold designs to confirm the project's direction.

How to play and what changes visually

Although it uses a different game engine, Slay the Spire 2 preserves the same dark fantasy world with a colorful aesthetic. In each new run, the player chooses a class with a starting deck and ascends a tower full of enemies. Battles function like a card game: you draw cards, play actions to attack, defend, apply poisons, buffs, and debuffs. Upon defeating enemies and bosses, new cards, upgrades, and artifacts emerge to shape diverse strategies.

Legacy of the original and sequence novelties

The original Slay the Spire was a garage hit that popularized the roguelike deckbuilder and card game subgenre. It also introduced the idea of exploring events between battles while traversing different levels. Games like Monster Train, Cobalt Core, and Star Vaders can trace their roots back to this format.

What's new

In addition to extra enemies and cards, the title brings two new playable classes and, most importantly, multiplayer. Up to four players can play together in the new cooperative mode, exploring specific cards and strategies. Currently, there is no online matchmaking; multiplayer works via the Steam friends list.

Slay the Spire 2 is now available on Steam Early Access.
