Meet Decky Translator, a Decky Loader plugin that translates on-screen content using OCR and language options, directly on the Steam Deck.

What is Decky Translator

Decky Translator is a new plugin for the Decky Loader Plugin Framework, the ecosystem that injects community-developed plugins into the Steam Deck's Game Mode. These plugins expand the device's functions, such as lossless upscaling or customization of game art.

How it works

The highlight is translating whatever appears on the screen at any time, with just one click. The plugin can use three OCR engines (RapidOCR, OCR.Space, and Google Cloud Vision) and offers translation via Google Translate or Google Cloud Translation.

Practical use results

In my tests, it manages to locate the text on the screen of most games with a good hit rate and present readable translations.

In BALL x PIT, for example, the main menu in German was completely detected and clearly translated into English.

On the other hand, in Warriors Abyss, the detection did not find the Japanese main menu text, even with fine adjustments to enlarge the reading of text boxes.

Installation and availability

Decky Translator can be downloaded from the project repository. After downloading, just move the folder to the plugins folder or install via ZIP using Decky's developer mode. The team promises to make it available soon in the Decky Store to facilitate installation.

Conclusion

Despite some limitations, the idea is promising: translating content in real-time can be especially useful for games without English support or those that launch initially in Japan, such as certain titles in the Trails series. It is a practical tool for reading texts in different languages more easily.
