$100 discount brings the Asus ROG Ally to $499, $50 below the Steam Deck OLED. Check out the details and what changes.
Significant discount: Asus ROG Ally becomes cheaper than the Steam Deck OLED
The Asus ROG Ally has received a $100 discount on Amazon, bringing the Windows handheld to just $499. This price is $50 lower than the Steam Deck OLED.
Originally launched at $599, the Ally is not as powerful as the Ally X, but it delivers advantages over the Steam Deck, including a higher resolution screen and compatibility with a wider range of Windows games.
It is worth noting that this discount is not an official price cut from Microsoft, which means we do not know if it will be permanent. Other retailers have not yet responded, making the promotion significant for the time being.
In our review of the Ally X, we highlighted the ergonomic design, excellent screen, and battery life. These attributes also translate to the more affordable base model, the original Ally.
- CPU: AMD Ryzen AI Z2A with four Zen 2 cores up to 3.8 GHz
- GPU: AMD Radeon RDNA 2 with 8 CUs up to 1.8 GHz
- RAM: 16GB LPDDR5X 6,400 MT/s
- Display: 7-inch IPS LCD, 1920 × 1080
- Battery: 60 Wh
- Storage: 512GB M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 SSD
- Weight: 670 g (1.48 lb)
- Dimensions: 90.8 × 121.5 × 50.7 mm
- Price: $499 (normally $599)
Beyond a higher resolution screen and a larger battery, the Ally offers clock gains that translate to superior performance compared to the Steam Deck OLED in certain scenarios. It also allows playing titles like Apex Legends, which, according to the text, are banned on the Steam Deck running Linux, in addition to offering access to stores such as the Epic Games Store and Xbox.
It is important to acknowledge that while the Steam Deck OLED has a more vibrant display, the Ally compensates with support for variable refresh rate for smoother frames. Ultimately, both are more suitable for indie games than for the latest AAA titles.
Even with the discount, the Steam Deck LCD remains a cheaper option, and Valve has confirmed it will stop producing this model, which puts it out of stock.
In the UK, the promotional price is £449 (down from £499).
With the recent price increases in the PC hardware segment, it is encouraging to see such a complete platform at a discount. Will we see Asus/Amazon repeat this move with laptops in the future?
What do you think of this price drop? Is the discounted Asus ROG Ally a more interesting option than the Steam Deck OLED, or is it still worth waiting?
