Analysis on the absence of a demo section on the Steam Deck during Next Fest and the impact on game discovery.
The Next Fest continues to grow as a showcase for PC releases, with thousands of demos to explore. However, the experience on the Steam Deck reveals a recurring flaw: there is no dedicated demo section on the Steam Deck storefront.
While you use your laptop to browse the store and save demos to your library, they do not appear on the Steam Deck's home screen, showing up irregularly only in the library. Valve's idea — supposedly — is that upon downloading the demos, they would be added to the home screen chronologically. But, for those who want to test several options at once, this is not helpful.
Previously, the author even created a Demos folder using Decky Loader. But Decky has been malfunctioning, nearly rendering the device unusable until it was deactivated in safe mode, which makes this solution unfeasible.
This is an old question: why doesn't Valve add a demo section to the Steam Deck interface, especially during events like Next Fest, which revolve around thousands of options to try out? The frustration is real: it seems there is a struggle between an incredible platform and navigation that doesn't keep up with the pace of new releases.
Next Fest is underway, but there is no sign of an update to the Deck interface to facilitate access to demos. Although there is hope for improvement in the next edition, many readers are left with the feeling of fighting against the console itself during one of the biggest gaming events of the year.
