No Man's Sky updates for Switch, Switch 2 and Steam Deck require 2-3x more development time due to memory limitations.
Portability that defied expectations
No Man's Sky arrived on the Switch against all odds, proving that ambitious ports can exist. Today, updates for Switch, Switch 2 and Steam Deck require more technical effort, thanks to the smaller memory of these platforms.
Effort multiplied by each update
Martin Griffiths, engine engineer at Hello Games, said that 2-3x more time of engineering is required to make these updates work with the same quality as other platforms and PC/Mac. The challenge is made impossible by the memory on these platforms.
Switch 2 is not the same as last-gen consoles
No Man's Sky on the Switch 2 is far beyond what the original version offers, but it still falls short of what the Xbox Series X and PS5 deliver. Even so, the advances in lesser hardware continue to impress with every update.
Leave your comment: do you think this extra effort is worth it to keep No Man's Sky alive on these devices, or would you prefer to see efforts directed at more powerful platforms?
