What is the Steam Fan Snapshot

The Steam Fan Snapshot is a GameDiscoverCo initiative to understand who Steam fans are, how they discover games, and what drives them to purchase. It is an opt-in survey that connects responses to the Steam catalog, using anonymized data to allow comparisons between games.

This is a snapshot of a specific type of player and, while useful, it does not replace detailed surveys or playtesting. The idea is to offer high-level insights into device usage, age, gender, and discovery habits.

Who has already responded

The first reading provides about 10,000 responses distributed across 8 questions, with plans to increase the volume by 5 to 10 times over time.

Responses are linked to the Steam catalog with consent, allowing any game to be compared with the sample average.

Key initial findings by game

  • Profile by game: comparing titles helps to understand variations in the buyer base.
  • Gender: some titles show a near-balanced distribution, while Madden NFL hits peaks of up to 93.5% male respondents; the average remains above 80% male.
  • Age: the general average age is around 30, with variations between 25 and 36 years depending on the title.
  • Featured age range: 39% of Peak owners and 55% of Webfishing players are 18-24 years old, revealing a relevant generational bias.
  • Devices used >1 hour per month: 16% use Steam Deck, 17% Switch, 16.5% PS4/PS5, 10% Xbox, 10.1% iOS, and 32.5% Android.
  • Switch overindex: Hello Kitty Island Adventure (45%) and Webfishing (38%); Train Sim Classic falls below average in almost everything that is not PC; Madden drives iOS usage.

How people discover games

Webfishing dominates with 69% of discovery through word of mouth. The use of short-form videos for discovery varies greatly between titles, and there are differences in the relevance of platforms like Steam, media sites, Discord, and other channels.

Data usage and limitations

The set is available to GDCo Pro subscribers; GDCo Plus readers can access demos, and it does not replace detailed research. The goal is to provide useful data points for marketing strategies.

Top 100 streaming in March 2026

Stream Hatchet analyses highlight the 100 most-watched games on major non-Chinese streaming platforms in March 2026. Highlights include:

  • The top 10 continue to feature traditional names like League of Legends, GTA V, Counter-Strike, and Valorant.
  • Res Evil Requiem and Crimson Desert appear in the Top 10, with Requiem at 59 million hours watched and Crimson Desert at 47 million.
  • Overwatch maintained a good presence after the rebranding, with about 40.3 million hours watched in March.
  • New entries on the list: Pokémon Pokopia, Slay the Spire 2, Marathon, and QSMP II appear among the top 100.
  • The Hexi expansion for Where Winds Meet generated a significant increase in views, with an initial 8x growth.

This data helps publishers, funds, and analysts understand consumption trends in the PC and console ecosystem and guide marketing strategies.

The material can also be used by teams interested in understanding audience behavior, in addition to offering a practical view for future campaigns.
