The optional patch increases difficulty and divides the community
An optional update for Slay The Spire 2 has caused a wave of negative reviews on Steam, with fans arguing that the patch makes the early access roguelike significantly more challenging.
What changed with the patch
The Silent's Prepared is no longer free. It now forces the discard of two cards and grants energy on the next turn, meaning it is no longer possible to play without cost for this move.
Enemies and bosses received difficulty increases. Doormaker becomes more dangerous, attacking more frequently and consuming the 10th card the player draws. The Regent also received nerfs to common deck choices like Glow and Charge.
Relics became cheaper in shops, with a 25 gold reduction, and Phobia Mode replaces scarier visual art with less disturbing options.
Community Reaction
The response on Steam was quick and generally hostile, ranging from short criticisms to longer essays about what changed in practice. Many point out that removing infinites does not solve the environment that leads to that type of strategy and highlight Elite battles as a point of greater difficulty that some players now avoid.
- Patch elements generating criticism: rework of Prepared for The Silent, broad buffs to enemies including Doormaker, nerfs to Regent deck options, reduction in relic prices, and Phobia Mode.
- Complaints about the lack of usable alternatives when broken strategies are nerfed and the increased difficulty in Elite encounters.
The developer described the update as optional and the question remains whether further adjustments will come. Besides the balance changes, quality of life and visual improvements arrived that some fans approved of, which makes the debate about balancing more complex.
