Valve details compatibility goals for SteamOS on new platforms: Steam Machine, Steam Frame VR, and a redesigned controller.
Initiative Summary
At GDC 2026, Valve presented how it intends to expand the SteamOS ecosystem to three new items: Steam Machine, Steam Frame VR, and a redesigned controller. The focus was on guiding developers on the necessary compatibility verification required to maintain a cohesive experience across devices, drawing on lessons learned from the Steam Deck.
Steam Machine: Living Room Powerhouse
- CPU: AMD Zen 4 (6 cores / 12 threads)
- GPU: RDNA 3 with 28 compute units
- RAM: 16 GB DDR5
- VRAM: 8 GB GDDR6
- Storage: up to 2 TB
- Support for 4K/60 FPS with FSR and ray tracing
Valve claims that the Steam Machine should deliver approximately six times the performance of the Steam Deck, consolidating a compact console-style gaming PC for the living room.
Verification Program: Steam Machine Verified
To obtain the Steam Machine Verified badge, games must meet these goals:
- 1080p resolution
- Stable 30 FPS
- Full controller support
- Compatibility with SteamOS features (offline, input glyphs, etc.)
Titles verified for the Deck usually qualify automatically for Steam Machine Verified status in most cases, reducing adaptation work for developers. The same logic applies to Deck Playable titles with limitations only on text legibility or resolution.
Valve also describes categories such as Machine Playable, Machine Unsupported, and Machine Test, used to signal different levels of SteamOS support.
Steam Frame: Standalone VR Headset
- SoC: Snapdragon 8 Gen 3
- Memory: 16 GB LPDDR5X
- Display: dual 2160×2160 LCD screens
- Refresh: up to 144 Hz
- Connectivity: Wi-Fi 7
- Internal storage: up to 1 TB
The Frame works independently or can stream games from a PC via Steam Link. Since it runs on ARM, Valve is heavily investing in compatibility layers like Proton, FEX, and Android runtimes to expand the game library.
Steam Frame Verification
- Native VR games on the headset: 90 FPS are required
- 2D games running on the headset: minimum 720p and 30 FPS
The goals above apply to native execution on the headset. Streaming games remain dependent on the performance of the host system.
