SteamOS update adds the NTSync driver; older Call of Duty games on the Steam Deck gain performance when using Proton GE.
SteamOS Update Boosts Performance in Older Games
A recent SteamOS update brought performance improvements to older Call of Duty titles on the Steam Deck by enabling the NTSync driver. Although it is a relatively small change, the effects can be significant in specific titles.
According to the evaluation, World at War, Black Ops 1, and Black Ops 2 showed noticeable performance gains after the update. Among them, Black Ops 2 showed the most perceptible gain, but the other two titles also managed to show improvements.
How These Improvements Occur
To achieve this gain, it is necessary to run the games using Proton GE, a community-developed version (Glorious Eggroll). Proton GE brings fixes and codecs that are not present in the stable version of Proton. With Call of Duty games, Proton GE automatically uses the new NTSync driver, which explains the observed improvements.
If you don't have Proton GE yet, there is a recommended path to install it on your Steam Deck. The NTSync + Proton GE combination is the key to these optimizations in older titles.
Important Notes
Not every old game or recent Call of Duty release will benefit. This is a specific case that takes advantage of the new driver, but it does not guarantee universal improvement across all titles.
Even so, World at War, Black Ops 1, and Black Ops 2 remain classics worth revisiting on the Steam Deck, especially with this set of improvements.
If you are curious, a guide is available to install Proton GE on the Steam Deck, facilitating the application of these improvements.
