SteamOS 3.7.20 arrives with the NTSync driver and major changes to Steam Client

Valve has released the latest stable batch of SteamOS alongside a major stable update to the Steam Client for all platforms. See what has changed on each front.

What's New in SteamOS 3.7.20

  • General — Added ntsync driver.
  • Non-Deck — Enabled polkit for the InputPlumber dbus interface and resolved a race condition involving CVE-2025-66005 and CVE-2025-14338.

The NTSync driver is a feature we have already covered here on GamingOnLinux. Originally released with the Linux 6.14 kernel in March 2025, it brings synchronization closer to Windows standards to offer greater accuracy and performance, especially for Windows games running on Linux via a compatibility layer. Do not expect widespread performance leaps, as Proton already brought something similar, but some titles might benefit in specific situations.

Stable Steam Client Update for Everyone

  • General — Option to attach hardware specifications when writing or updating user reviews on game store pages.
  • Option to provide framerate data anonymously; the data helps understand Steam compatibility and improvement. The feature is in Beta focusing on devices running SteamOS.
  • Icon in the game list tools with a tooltip explaining its function.
  • Notification settings to make it visible when an achievement is unlocked, with an associated sound.
  • Warning when selecting Tools for the first time in the library filter, explaining what tools are and why they appear in the list.
  • Fix for intermittent error in the downloads view when moving entries between scheduled and queued sections.
  • Fix for correctly displaying TPM and Secure Boot status on Windows in the System Information window when using the 64-bit client.
  • Fix for displaying the build creation date of a beta version instead of the assignment date.
  • Library — Installed demos that are no longer playable now show Uninstall instead of Play as the primary action; newly added demos and free-to-play games appear at the top of the recent list.
  • Hardware Survey / System Information — Fixes VRAM reporting for some cards; in multiple adapters, the one with more VRAM will now be used for display and reporting to Steam.
  • Game Recording — Fixes export of game clips with names containing invalid Windows characters.
  • Chat — The /store command will now use the new Store trailer player.
  • Remote Play — Fixes hover behavior when using a pen/stylus on tablets.
  • Steam Families — Layout and navigation improvements for settings on desktop, Deck, and mobile devices.
  • Accessibility — Various fixes for high contrast mode.
  • Streaming — Fixes case where streaming would throttle downloads even after completion.
  • Linux — Fixes Proton games displaying as invalid in large libraries when offline; fixes large library incorrectly showing status for offline.
  • Steam Input — Added Button options to Mode Select Menu, replaced dropdown menu with a multi-button selector, alignment of Gyro minimal output to Joystick deflection behavior, input latency improvement during third-party controller vibration, option to remap Gyro ranges to Deflection per axis or circular, and fixes a crash in Gyro To Joystick Deflection with zero output values that negatively affected internal dead zones of some games.

Specific Changes for Deck / SteamOS

  • Lock screen options unified between wake/power and before the login screen, displaying the lock on login when appropriate.
  • When submitting feedback about Deck Verified, if there is a disagreement, the reason may be requested (optional).
  • On the featured showcase, displays the largest available capsule resolution for the featured game in the recent carousel when online.
  • Fixes for quick focus between elements and gamepad input failures.
  • Fix for installing some games in large libraries.
  • Fix for the chosen keyboard theme not applying offline.
  • Fix for the in-game mode footer not flickering or disappearing.
  • Fix for Switch Pro Controller LEDs lighting up even when disabled.
  • Fix for configuration items that could disappear from ABXY options.
  • Fix for action set information being cut off on the configuration editing page.

In summary, it is a dual update: SteamOS 3.7.20 with the NTSync driver and the robust Steam Client update covering various areas, with a focus also on improvements for Deck. Which change are you planning to test first on your setup?
