Steam Machine returns to the living room with open PC promises

More than a decade after the first attempt, Valve reveals a new Steam Machine designed to sit next to the television, accompanied by a redesigned Steam Controller and a Steam Frame VR headset, forming a trio for the home gaming experience.

Performance and hardware

The machine is described as a compact PC based on SteamOS 3, capable of running the entire Steam library without needing an additional PC. Valve claims more than six times the performance of a Steam Deck, utilizing a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 architecture with an RDNA3 GPU, targeting native 4K at 60fps with FidelityFX Super Resolution.

  • Storage: 512 GB or 2 TB SSD
  • Expansion via microSD
  • Ports for peripherals and external monitors

Open ecosystem

Unlike closed consoles, the Steam Machine runs SteamOS and maintains support for Proton, allowing many Windows games to run on Linux. Users will be able to easily connect keyboards, mice, and gamepads, with the interface adapted for both TVs and monitors.

Price, availability, and open questions

Valve stated that the Steam Machine will not be subsidized like consoles and should be priced like a PC with similar performance. The launch is scheduled for early 2026, but without a formal announcement of price or exact date. There are questions about the chosen CPU/GPU generation and long-term potential.

Impact on the future of home gaming

The vision is to build a unified ecosystem across handhelds, desktops, TVs, and virtual reality, with the Steam Machine acting as the base for this experience. Valve does not intend to pursue exclusives or proprietary stores, betting on the open ecosystem, the extensive library, and user freedom.

If this plan succeeds, it could redefine what we expect from living room gaming — offering the console experience combined with PC customization. Time will tell, especially regarding the price.

What do you think of this Valve bet? Do you think it's worth investing in a Steam Machine for your living room? Leave your opinion in the comments.
